SFB 335 "Anisotrope Fluide" (AG Muschik)

The Sonderforschungsbereich 335 is an interdisciplinary network at the TU Berlin doing research on liquid crystals. Different faculties are involved: organic and physical chemistry, mechanical engineering, experimental and theoretical physics.
The part presented here shows only a small amount of the overall activities!

2D Systems ("Films")

Liquid crystalline films or boundary layers are examined with the methods of nonequilibrium thermodynamics and differential geometry to learn more about their constitutive properties. Please send a mail to C. Papenfuß if you want to know more.

3D Systems

During the last years a mesoscopic way of describing nematic liquid crystals has been developed. Items of particular interest have been the balance equations and constitutive equations in connection with the second law, but also special material coefficients, such as the Miesowicz viscosities. For details read the following introduction (see Warning below).

Warning: Since HTML does not support formulas the introduction contains lots of inline graphics to display mathematics. Think twice before reading if you have already problems with the band width of your internet connection.
